Silver: 46.3 Million Oz Deficit — The Float Is Already Thinning

Aug 27, 2026, 4:21 p.m. IST

Despite headlines warning of a looming silver shortage, the reality is far more nuanced and arguably more important for investors.

Silver is still available. You can buy it online, over the phone, or store it in secure vaults around the world.

But beneath the surface, the market is becoming increasingly constrained.

In our latest GoldCore TV episode, we explore the structural forces reshaping the silver market. We explain why deliverable silver is very different from reported silver, how paper markets can mask physical tightness, and why investors should understand the difference between COMEX registered and eligible inventories.

We also examine a lesser-known challenge on the supply side. Nearly three-quarters of newly mined silver comes as a byproduct of copper, lead, zinc and gold mining, meaning higher silver prices don’t necessarily lead to higher silver production.

The result isn’t an imminent shortage of silver. It’s a market where the freely available supply is becoming increasingly limited.

Market Update

Gold is testing support following its recent bullish breakout. Holding above the 200-day moving average could reinforce the reversal and keep the $4,780 target in play.

Gold pulled back to a three-day low of $4,583 on Wednesday as hotter-than-expected U.S. inflation data weighed on the precious metal. The next key technical signal will come from how gold behaves around its 200-day moving average, currently near $4,523. A successful test of that level would strengthen the bullish technical outlook, while a decisive break below it would raise the risk that the recent breakout is failing.

On the fundamental side, the Federal Reserve’s preferred inflation gauge showed that price pressures remained sticky in July. Headline PCE inflation held at 3.7% year-on-year, slightly above expectations, while core PCE remained at 3.3%. The data have kept the prospect of further interest-rate increases alive ahead of Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s closely watched Jackson Hole speech on Friday.
